Although it is CCSL softball, one of which I’m sure are thousands of leagues across the country, it’s amazing to me how emotional and competitive these games can get. Everyone in the league knows the game is played to be fun,
but every once in a while situations arise that sometimes lack explanation. I mean let’s face it, some people hit the ball far, and occasionally into a different time zone, as evidenced by a hit in this week’s Collar-Tap Room
matchup.
It was game that featured a number of close calls, bang-bang plays, whichever cliché you prefer, but one of those plays that ultimately decided the game was indeed questionable. A call that was great if you were the
winning team, a call you think his horseshit if you take the loss—and although it was a great game, the Collar got caught up in the horseshit.
The visiting Collar jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the 1st, SPTR would answer back with a few runs of their own, and eventually took the lead in the middle innings. Collar kept it within striking distance, and with their last
at-bat came up huge, with the exception of my shit-ass at-bat. Adam led off with a solid double, and Robbie moved him over to third with a solid sac-fly, the FineMan had a solid shot up the middle, yours truly shit himself, then J DUB
came up big… 2 outs, 1 on, he represented the tying run—and there it was—a shot to the left-center gab, and he got on his horse and scored---game knotted up at 9’s.
SPTR’s bomber led off the bottom of the 7th… a no doubles, triples, homeruns, defense was put into effect. After a few pitches, a bomb went off… you have to give credit where credit is do, and the ball was crushed… no doubt… however, after having traveled at least 300+ feet down the left field line, the ball landed… a controversy ensued. SPTR’s third-base coach had deemed it a fair ball—while myself, along with others on the Collar could not
understand how. Had there been chalk all the way down the line, I can pretty much guarantee that would have been a foul ball in the cheap seats, but what can you do.
SPTR called it a fair ball, and took the game 10-9 victory on a questionable call. I can only hope that other games this season, for all the teams’ sake, do not end that way. After 6.5 innings of great softball, it was definitely tough
to see it end that way. But we move on. We’ll take the 1-1 record into next week’s game and look to capture win # 2.
24th and Fairmount Player of the Game: J Dub, 4-4, HR, 2R –clutch game tying HR in the top of the 7th. Another great performance by Adam as well, 3-4, 2B, HR, 3R.
