Monday night's matchup against the other art program was a fun contest. And nothing goes with softball like warm Coors Light! It cannot be confirmed, but I'm pretty sure E was looking to get abolished for ever being responsible for beer again.Yes, the starting pitcher showed up with a case of warm Coors Light, no ice, no cooler... entirely unacceptable, and we let him know about it. In fact, I took pleasure in putting the jinx on his No-No after he retired the 1st 5 batters in a row. Regardless of the warm beer, Adam came up big with cold Miller Lite's... thank you Adam, and enjoy your trip! It was a solid effort all around on the field, and the bats came alive as the Collar took the W 20-3. I don't have the book, but I'm quite certain everyone had at least 1 hit--a solid tune up for next week's matchup against the non-blogging SPTR. Sorry folks for the brief hiatus in getting this blog up to date, but after hearing stories last night about Hoagiefest going until 6:00AM (not a typo, 6 in the GOD DAMN MORNING), I'm glad I waited a week to write about what was clearly an epic Hoagiefest. But before I get to the hoagiefest, let me get to the game a little bit. Colllar had it's first showdown with league newcomers, the Catasomethin Refugees, or otherwise known as a bunch of people from the Franklin that started their own team. Nice electric blue jerseys with gray sleeves by the way. While I do not remember all of the details of the game, I know it was a well played defensively with the exception of one bad inning where the refugees dropped 9 runs on us, most of which were with 2 outs--that inning would ultimately be the difference maker in the game as the Collar took their first official loss 18-9. A funny moment in the 7th when we pulled within.. wait for it... 9... and Whitmarsh started to get serious... making an official visit to the mound. All in all, it was definitely a game we wish we could have back. Coming off an exhaustive victory the night before against P&P, the offense just didn't have the pop. Always a great time playin' the likes of Ventrola, Whitmarsh, and Siebert among others... hopefully we will see them in the playoffs! And now on to Hoagiefest! Hats off to Phyllis for organizing a great event--the hoagies were great, and they were apparently just the start of an all night long, til 6 in the mornin'... I heard a lot of stories about the evening/morning, including E running with fire! A lot of people were looking for Benson early on, but he made it clear on Facebook that Hoagiefest wasn't his thing: I can't really say that I blame him, I got rid of the onions on my hoagie too. But in all seriousness, it was a great time, always great to see a lot of familiar faces from across the league come out and enjoy a nice evening. Walk off double, Spence scored from 2nd, then hit the ice. Monday night's rescheduled matchup vs. P&P was as they say, "well worth the wait." It was a game that featured it all--defense, clutch hitting, character, sportsmanship, rain (lightning free rain), Refugee spectators--ya' put all that together on Dairy 2, and it makes for one helluva' night. The Pencils came out sharp, dropping some #2 lead all over the field in the top half of the 1st, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Collar hit the board in the bottom of the 2nd, down 4-1 heading into the 3rd inning. A pitchers duel ensued over the next 3 innings, until the 6th inning, and that's when things got interesting. P&P would add 2 more in the top of the 6th to take a 6-1 lead, and that's when the Collar went to work. What seems to be a formidable position, down 5 runs with 2 frames left, the Collar has been there before--down, but never out. We would add 3 in the 6th to get within striking distance for our last at-bat. After a shutdown innning in the field, down 2, Collar brought out their spare change, and nickeled and dimed their way to a 6-6 tie and FREE SOFTBALL! Another solid defensive performance in the top of the 8th and the table was set for a game winner. Yours truly led off with a shit-single, moved up to second with a single by Spence, Pat-the-Bat hit into a fielders choice, and there it was--1st and 2nd, 1 out, Gray Skies at the plate. The Gray Skies cleared up after she hit a double over the left-fielder's head and Spence would score the winning run--a 7-6 victory. It was a gritty W, but a W nonetheless. Now on to the Refugee's tonight back @ Dairy 2 followed by one of the main events of the season--hoagiefest. In the meantime, don't count on any blog posts from SPTR: |
