Monday night's contest came after a bye week thanks to Pencil & Pen's inability to field a team; and one could say the Collar had a few innings of rust to shake off early in the artistic contest. Or it could have been the fact that no matter where we hit the ball, someone from Art was there to catch it--with the exception of Rice. We witnessed a bit of history on Edgeley 4 as Rice had what I remember was back-to-back errors--there coulda' been a batter in between, but nevertheless 2 errors in the inning was very uncharacteristic from the veteran shortstop. He did however make up for it with a HR later in the game. It was a game that featured minor elements from Mother Nature, and I appreciate everyone letting me know the sounds of planes above were not in fact thunder; cause well... we know what happens when thunder is in the area. But back to the game, the Collar found themselves down 9-2 at one point in the middle innings, then battled back with some clutch, 2-out RBI's. This was reminiscent of last years comeback against the Zoo; not quite as many runs, but a great, meaningless comeback nonetheless. Ultimately taking the lead in the Bottom of the 6th, Art would only send 4 batters to the plate in the top half of the 7th, and that was your ballgame, a 12-11 victory for the Collar to go 4-1 on the season. Head CCSL Analyst and chief refugee Ryan Whitmarsh was on hand and he certainly looks forward to playing ART in the 1 game playoff to face either the Collar or Taproom in the Bob Ford Summer Classic. 24th and Fairmount Player of the Game: E Coloch. His $4.99, plastic dugout was actually quite effective, and he pitched a good game, and made some key plays when needed. In closing, it was suggested to me prior to the game by an unnamed source that I should start a Benson Facebook Status Update of the week. Seeing how this only my 2nd season in the CCSL, and not knowing Mr. Benson quite like many others do across the league, I do not believe it would be appropriate for me to comment on said updates. I've never actually seen these Facebook updates, but I imagine Elmer's 'warning track and beyond' type power has something to do with them. Congrats on that 30-4 win by the way. Well done. Freedom is calling. Shoutouts to Phyllis, Laniece, and Rice a Roni for their help in putting together the bbq after the game, and of course my man Frank for calling me out for leaving early--I love you man. And finally, I hope everyone has a fantastic Memorial Day Weekend, and takes just a few moments to say thank you to our Veterans and current members of our Armed Forces for their sacrifices. To any of you in CCSL that wore the uniform, all of us at the Collar salute you! June 4-5 - Double Header... Pen & Pencil, followed by the Refugees... bring it. "...the sea was angry that day my friends..." we all know, or at least should know the pickle George got himself into that fateful day at the beach and the face he made as the challenge emerged....fast forward a decade or so, and there was Robbie, at the end of yesterday's game scorebook in hand, with the same face asking, "is anyone here a public accountant?" The Collar's 2012 Edgeley debut agaist the Freedom Fighters of Old City started out with some Labatt Blue and that was pretty much the end of that. It was a tough one for the Freedom Fighters, having lacked more offensive firepower than their ancestors at Lexington and Concord, they definitely made up for it with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship. So congrats the commissioners for bringing a great group of folks into CCSL this year...as for the Refugees, the verdict is still out, but they can certainly blog their balls off. As I said, an accountant was brought in to finalize the books, so the final score is irrelevant. The Collar was down at one point early in the game, as Freedom put up a couple 1st inning runs. Adam led off again with solid hit, then was brought in on a few sacrifice flies to get 1 back in the bottom half of the 1st. Collar played some great defense, big E struck out 3 in what was a career day for him, and after the 2nd inning bombardment the Collar never looked back, unless it was to see if more Labatt Blue was left in the cooler. Great games all around, and although what could be a record number of runs scored for the Collar, some how J-Dub found a way to NOT cross the plate yesterday, leaving yours truly to lead off atleast 3 or 4 times throughout the game. In his defense, after the 2nd time, I think he was just doing it on purpose. 24th and Fairmount Player of the Game: The Fine Man; a poopload of hits, 2HR, 7-8 RBI's, and as always a solid glove at short. Another top performance by Adam Wojno-Voino-Whatdyaknow, led the Collar with 4 runs scored on the night. Collar advances to 3-1* on the season, and takes on P&P Monday, May 14th at Edgeley 4 (I think) This is your new blog post. Click here and start typing, or drag in elements from the top bar.
Tuesday's non-divisional match up between the Collar and Zoo featured a lot of great defense, suspect uniforms, barefeet, incredible SlingBox technology, clutch hitting, leftover Michelob Ultra (was probably leftover for a reason), a Bob Ford appearance, and an infield that actually had a third-base line. We took the field first, for the first time this season at what has come to feel like home, Dairy 4. E pitched his way out of a jam early, and the Collar tacked on an early run in the 1st thanks to a double by J Dub that scored Robbie from 1st.
Collar would go on to build a solid 6-2 lead thanks solid hitting; the FineMan, Buckeye, J Dub, Robbie--lots of small ball led to the 4 run read that would disappear in the top half of the 6th when Zoo put up a 4-spot to tie the game at 6 a piece. The bottom of the 6th proved to be the difference maker. E, led off with a single, and hammered down the line in his aerodynamic, cycling jersey, and Carolyn ripped one to left that got by the left fielder, and scored E from 1st and with one-and-a-half wheels Carolyn ended up on 3rd with nobody out. Her hit would ultimately supply the go ahead run. After Adam lined to short, back to back singles by Robbie and Ben, and more hits by Spence and yours truly, the Collar would go on to put up 5 in the inning. A quick top half of the 7th and there it was, Collar's 2nd win of the season to go 2-1 on the year. Next week's match up is on Monday, May 7th over on Edgeley 4 against the fans of First Fridays, Old City. 24th and Fairmount Player of the Game: Big E 1-3, 1R... pitched a great game, flashed a lot of leather on some hard shots up the middle, and scored the go ahead run. Other top performers, Robbie 3-4, 2R; Adam 3-4, HR; The Fine Man 2-4, 3B, 2R |
