E would not give up his quest for fire.
The first day of 2011's summer in Philadelphia began as a day of high expectations as 2 of the CCSL's top teams were slated to go head to head on Edgeley 8, followed by what has become a time honored tradition--Hoagiefest. ART came into this match up following some of their first losses of the season, as we, The Collar, were finally dried off from last's weeks deluge vs. Franklin, and the historic comeback win against the Zoo 2 weeks before. In what was a lopsided victory for ART the first time we played them this year, this second match up proved to be much different.
Scoreless through 3, the game had some incredible defensive plays on both sides, including Robbie's awesome catch backing up Donny Money in what was almost a nasty collision. The infield made some great plays as well, turning a 1 double play, and Dougie almost had one of his own. I believe it was the top half of the 4th when we were able to break the goose egg and take a 1-0 lead on a great line drive by Dougie, scoring the Money-man who was on his HORSE rounding 3rd.
The bottom of the 4th proved to be the difference maker in this contest as ART put together a string of hits, found the right holes, and scored 5 runs, which in all honesty could have been more but ART's Ray got in the way of a screaming ground ball up the first base side and was immediately called out, and then a home run was erased as the batter missed 3rd and was called out on the appeal--kudos to the integrity of the ART's 3rd base coach. Nevertheless, ART posted a 5 spot in the inning, added another in the bottom of the 6th, and we were down 5 heading into our final 3 outs. A couple good hits to lead off, and almost immediately we were getting that feeling back that we had against the Zoo...I think it was Mike A.B.T, (the original #18), that legged out a single to get the inning started, and he eventually scored, cutting the deficit to 4, with 2 on and 2 out, tying run was on deck, and that was all she wrote. ART cut down the rally, and took the W 6-2.
I'm not going to hide the fact that this was a tough loss as we all know we're a better team than our 2 runs showed, we just couldn't get the bats going and that's that.
Switching gears, Hoagiefest was a great time. Again, as this is my rookie season, my first Hoagiefest just about sums up why this league is probably hands down, one of the best in the city. Everyone came out, had a great time, enjoyed a great night at Edgeley 8. What's ironic is that the park ranger had an issue with where my car was parked, but didn't seem to mind the fact that Big E was trying to light an inferno, unsuccessfully I might add, around the pitchers mound. You could see the frustration in the young pyro's face, but there's always next year E, you've got 364 days to figure out what burns better than cintronella oil. And let's not forget the 2 jokers that decided to show up at the end of the game who looked like they walked straight out Michael Jackson's Thriller video--I mean... JESUS...
Anyway, a huge thank you to Phyllis, Laniece, and everyone that had a hand in making last night's Hoagiefest a great, great time.
